Set a target from the job, not your history
Build a range using the role's responsibilities, seniority, industry, location and total package. Separate three numbers:
- Target: the package you believe is fair
- Acceptable floor: the lowest package you would genuinely take
- Walk-away point: the terms below which moving makes no sense
Do not reveal the floor at the start. Give a defensible target range and ask the employer to confirm its approved budget.
A script for expected salary
“Based on the responsibilities, the Dubai market for this level and the total package, I am targeting AED X–Y per month. Could you share the approved range and how it is divided between basic salary, allowances and variable pay?”
The range should be narrow enough to be meaningful. If the role is still vague, ask for the full description before naming a figure.
When they ask for your current salary
You can redirect without becoming confrontational:
“I would prefer to base the discussion on the value and scope of this role rather than my previous package. What range has been approved for the position?”
If you decide to disclose, explain the complete package accurately: basic pay, fixed allowances, bonus, insurance and other material benefits. Do not falsify a payslip or bank statement. Misrepresentation can cost you the offer and create wider consequences.
Read what to consider when an employer asks for a payslip.
Negotiate more than the headline number
If base pay cannot move, consider:
- A higher basic-salary share
- Guaranteed first-year bonus
- Joining bonus
- Housing or transport allowance
- Family medical insurance
- School allowance
- Additional annual leave
- Relocation costs
- Written salary review after probation
- Clear commission targets and payment timing
Treat verbal commitments as uncertain until they appear in the formal documents. UAE government guidance says the private-sector contract should be based on the signed offer, and provisions should not be changed after signing unless the employee consents and the change is lawful. Review the official job-offer and contract guidance (opens in a new tab).
After receiving the offer
Ask for time to review it. Compare the contract against the offer line by line. Confirm the employing legal entity, work location, title, basic salary, allowances, probation, notice, leave and variable-pay rules.
Use a calm counteroffer:
“I am excited about the role. Based on the scope and comparable positions, I would be comfortable accepting at AED X total monthly compensation, with AED Y recorded as basic salary. If we can align there, I am ready to move forward.”
Bring evidence into the market
Negotiation improves when candidates can see what comparable employers pay.
