Red flags that deserve clarification

The employer will not identify the employing entity

Confirm the legal company name, work location and authority governing the employment relationship. A recognizable brand may not be the entity named in your contract.

The contract does not match the offer

Compare title, salary, allowances, location, working days, probation and notice. UAE government guidance says the private-sector contract should be based on the signed offer and explains when provisions may be amended. See job offers and the employment process (opens in a new tab).

You are told to work on a visit visa

The UAE government warns that a visit or tourist visa does not authorize work and explains how an official job offer can be checked. Review its labour and visa fraud guidance (opens in a new tab).

The salary breakdown is missing

Ask how much is basic salary, fixed allowance and variable pay. “Up to AED X” may include a bonus that few employees achieve.

A future raise is verbal

Treat “we will review it after probation” as no guaranteed increase unless the timing, amount or mechanism is documented.

Commission rules are undefined

Ask when commission is earned, when it is paid, what happens after cancellation and whether targets can change unilaterally.

The job description keeps expanding

Clarify reporting line, team size, territory, working hours and decision authority. A prestigious title may hide several understaffed jobs.

You are asked to pay recruitment or visa costs

Do not transfer money merely because a recruiter creates urgency. Verify the offer and the sender independently through official channels.

A pre-signing checklist

Confirm in writing:

  • Legal employer and workplace
  • Role and reporting line
  • Basic salary and every allowance
  • Bonus and commission rules
  • Working days and hours
  • Medical-insurance coverage
  • Probation and notice
  • Leave
  • Visa and relocation responsibility
  • Applicable employment authority

Search the employer, speak to current or former employees, and compare the offer with similar roles.
